How to size a battery backup for an egg incubator outage

September 23, 2026

Last updated September 25, 2026. Not a lab test. Hours below are arithmetic: published watt-hours ÷ a cited incubator watt figure. We did not run a hatch on battery. No hatch-rate claims.

Size the battery from two published numbers: the incubator’s watts, and the battery’s watt-hours.

Hours ≈ battery Wh ÷ incubator watts.

That divide is a 100% heater-on ceiling, not a hatch test. Incubator heaters cycle. Brinsea prints both a maximum and a typical figure on the models below—use your own label if you own a different cabinet. AC power stations add inverter loss, so real AC hours are shorter than the raw divide.

Eco / power-saving mode off: Many portable stations cut AC output when the load stays under a low-watt threshold (Jackery’s Explorer 300 v2 product FAQ documents Energy Saving Mode shutting AC after six hours below 25 W). A small incubator’s typical draw—and the off half of a heater cycle—can sit under that threshold. Leave continuous / UPS-style AC on, or turn eco / power-saving off, before you trust the station overnight.

Named incubator watts (manufacturer / dealer sources)

Brinsea Mini II Advance — max 20 W, typical 12 W

Brinsea’s Mini II Advance product page lists Maximum 20 Watts — Typical 12 Watts, supply 100–230 V, 50/60 Hz, 0.5 A max. Item USAB16C. The US Mini II Advance manual PDF repeats the same power table: maximum 20 W, typical average 12 W.

Brinsea Ovation 28 Advance — max 60 W, typical 30 W

Brinsea’s Ovation 28 Advance product page lists Maximum 60 Watts — Typical 30 Watts, 230 V 50 Hz or 115 V 60 Hz. Item USAF36C. The US Ovation 28 Advance manual PDF matches: incubator maximum 60 W, typical average 30 W.

GQF Sportsman 1502 Digital — 325 W nameplate

Authorized dealer Incubator Warehouse’s GQF 1502 page prints 110–120 VAC and 325-watt capacity (SKU/model 1502; watt field 325). That is the heater-on nameplate ceiling, not a continuous average—thermostat cycling lowers real Wh use, but duty cycle is not a published Wh/h row. Size from 325 W first; treat cycling as unearned headroom.

Worked Wh ÷ W examples (arithmetic only)

Use two portable stations already cited on Boom’s CPAP and reptile drafts:

Hours below = Wh ÷ cited incubator watts. Not a hatch test. Inverter loss is ignored in the raw divide (real AC hours are shorter).

Read the table honestly: a Mini II Advance at Brinsea’s typical 12 W clears a calendar day on a 288 Wh station on paper. An Ovation 28 at typical 30 W needs closer to a 768 Wh class pack for a long multi-day outage ceiling. A 325 W cabinet nameplate will empty a small station in under an hour if the heater stays on—cabinet incubators need a larger Wh class, a generator path, or acceptance that thermostat cycling (unverified here) is doing real work.

Energy for a target outage at continuous cited watts (before inverter loss):

  • 12 W × 24 h = 288 Wh
  • 30 W × 24 h = 720 Wh
  • 60 W × 24 h = 1,440 Wh
  • 325 W × 8 h = 2,600 Wh

UPS vs portable power station

Desktop / rack UPS: Fast transfer (often under ~10 ms on line-interactive / online units). Consumer UPS marketing usually quotes VA and “minutes,” not Wh. Fine as a bridge for a brief blip if the VA rating exceeds the incubator watts—poor for a multi-hour hatch hold unless you verify published Wh.

Portable power station (PPS): Published Wh is on the maker page. Pure-sine AC outlets can feed the same wall plug the incubator already uses. Some units advertise UPS / EPS pass-through; transfer times vary—read the model page. For incubator outages measured in hours, Wh capacity is why a PPS usually wins over a small UPS.

Practical path: park the incubator on a sized PPS with eco mode off. Use a UPS only if you already own one sized for the watts and you only need minutes of bridge. Do not backfeed a panel from a station—see Boom’s transfer-switch page if you ever hardwire standby circuits.

Jackery Explorer 300 Plus — 288 Wh

Jackery US: 288 Wh, 300 W AC. Arithmetic at Brinsea Mini II typical 12 W: 24.0 hours. At Ovation 28 typical 30 W: 9.6 hours. At GQF 325 W nameplate: 0.9 hours. Workable for a small Brinsea on paper; too small for a cabinet nameplate ceiling.

BLUETTI AC70 — 768 Wh

BLUETTI US: 768 Wh, 1,000 W AC. Arithmetic at 12 W: 64.0 hours. At 30 W: 25.6 hours. At 60 W: 12.8 hours. At 325 W: 2.4 hours. Better multi-hour headroom for mid-size Brinsea loads on paper; still short for a 325 W cabinet if the heater stays on. Confirm kit vs bare station on the maker listing before you buy.
