Solar DC well pump path: suitcase Voc and 12–30 V sizing

September 11, 2026
Last updated September 11, 2026. Specs are from manufacturer product pages, datasheets, and manuals checked 7 September 2026 (Renogy and SunPumps product pages rechecked 11 September 2026). We did not install or lab-test this gear. This is not an install guide and not well-drilling or electrical advice.

A shallow-well or livestock trough job often wants a low-voltage DC solar pump — not a high-voltage AC submersible, and not a generic “best portable power station” page. The electrical question is narrower: does the panel open-circuit voltage (Voc) and the 12–30 V path fit the pump and controller the maker publishes?

This page stays on that path with three current catalog examples from research filed 7 September 2026:

  1. SunPumps SDS-D-128 — DC diaphragm solar submersible (12–30 VDC band)
  2. Renogy RNG-KIT-STCS200DC-VOY20-US — 200 W N-Type foldable suitcase with published Voc
  3. Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 — 12/24 V MPPT charge controller for a battery-backed 12 V path

It is not a Jackery / EcoFlow / Bluetti head-term roundup. It is not a well-drilling checklist. Hire a licensed well contractor and electrician for install, permitting, and code.

What “12–30 V path” means here

SunPumps rates the SDS D-series for 12–30 VDC. At full voltage (30 V) the SDS-D-128 row publishes 100 W motor power and 3.3 A. That is a solar-direct or battery DC class, not a 120/240 VAC household pump.

Two common layouts show up in maker docs (names vary by brand):

  • Solar-direct: PV array → pump controller / interface → DC motor. Array Voc must stay inside the controller’s published limit.
  • Battery-backed 12 V path: PV → charge controller (PWM or MPPT) → battery bank → DC pump (or a DC-DC stage the pump maker specifies). Suitcase Voc must fit the charge controller’s max PV Voc at the battery system voltage you chose.

This article only cites published Voc / V / A / W numbers. It does not invent continuous-duty watt-hour runtimes for the pump (it is not a battery product).

Why Voc matters

Voc is the panel’s open-circuit voltage at standard test conditions (STC) on the maker’s electrical table. It is higher than the operating voltage (Vmp). Controllers and pump interfaces publish a maximum Voc (or a “do not exceed” note). Exceeding that limit can damage the electronics even before the pump spins.

For the Renogy 200 W N-Type suitcase on today’s renogy.com page: Voc 21.47 V, Vmp 18.65 V, Imp 11.05 A, Isc 11.89 A, maximum power 200 W.

For the SunPumps SDS series companion controller family called out in the install/ops manual (PCA-30-M1D): the manual’s Voc check says the open-circuit voltage reading should not be over 45 volts. That is a controller limit from the maker PDF — not a license to ignore the pump’s own 12–30 VDC rating.

Do not mix Voc numbers across Renogy suitcase revisions. An older non-N-Type family printed Voc 24.3 V. Today’s N-Type kit is 21.47 V. Cite the SKU you actually buy.

Suitcase PWM vs a separate MPPT

The Renogy kit ships a pre-installed Voyager 20A PWM (model VOYP20). Maker table highlights for that controller include:

  • Battery rated current 20 A
  • System voltage 12 V / 24 V (auto detection for non-lithium on the manual family)
  • Max PV input (Voc): 12 V @ 25 V; 24 V @ 55 V
  • PV power input: 12 V @ 260 W; 24 V @ 520 W

A 21.47 V suitcase Voc sits under the 12 V-system 25 V Voc cap on that Voyager table. That is why Voc is the first number to check — before marketing Wh footnotes.

If you instead want a separate MPPT on a battery-backed 12 V path, the Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 is a common catalog example: max PV Voc 100 V, rated charge current 30 A, nominal PV power 440 W at 12 V (maker datasheet). It is a controller, not a pump and not a suitcase.

Renogy’s product page also prints a marketing line about “ideal 1 kWh* power everyday,” with the footnote *Calculated based on 200W x 5h expected sunlight availability. That is maker marketing arithmetic, not a measured site test. Do not treat it as a cited performance claim.

Current shortlist (maker specs only)

Three current picks from the 7 September 2026 research file. Amazon appears only where a live amazon.com listing confirmed the SKU.

SunPumps SDS-D-128 — DC diaphragm solar submersible

Official model: SDS-D-128 (SDS D-series duplex diaphragm submersible). Maker: SunPumps, Inc., Safford, AZ.

From the current SDS Series specifications PDF and the solarpumping.com product page (rechecked 11 September 2026):

  • Specs at full voltage (30 V): maximum flow 1.5 GPM / 5.7 LPM; maximum head 230 ft / 70 m; motor 100 W; motor 3.3 A
  • Series voltage rating: 12–30 VDC
  • Dimensions (series/product materials): diameter 3.8 in / 9.7 cm; height 10.8 in / 27.4 cm; weight 14 lb / 6.3 kg
  • Minimum well diameter for D-series: 4 in (100 mm) inside diameter and larger (series data sheet)
  • Discharge size on maker product page: 1/2″ NPT
  • Companion controller family on maker docs: PCA-30-M1D; manual Voc note: open-circuit voltage reading should not be over 45 V; never install the pump over 50 ft under static water level (install/ops manual)

Continuous-duty Wh runtime: unknown (not a battery product — do not invent hours).

Amazon ASIN: not confirmed for a live listing titled SDS-D-128. Buy from a seller that prints the current model, or order through the maker / a named distributor.

Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 — 12/24 V MPPT

Official model: SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 (max PV voltage 100 V, max battery charge current 30 A). Common dealer order code: SCC110030210.

From the Victron datasheet / technical specifications table:

  • Battery voltage: 12/24 V Auto Select
  • Rated charge current: 30 A
  • Nominal PV power, 12 V: 440 W; 24 V: 880 W
  • Maximum PV open-circuit voltage: 100 V
  • Max. PV short-circuit current: 35 A
  • Maximum efficiency: 98%
  • Full rated output up to 40 °C; operating −30 to +60 °C
  • Self-consumption: 12 V: 30 mA / 24 V: 20 mA
  • Default absorption 14.4 V / 28.8 V; float 13.8 V / 27.6 V
  • Safety: EN/IEC 62109-1, UL 1741, CSA C22.2
  • Weight 1.3 kg; dims 130 × 186 × 70 mm

Maker sizing notes: if more PV power is connected, the controller limits input power; PV voltage must exceed Vbat + 5 V to start; thereafter minimum PV voltage is Vbat + 1 V. A PV array with higher short-circuit current than rated may damage the controller.

Watt-hours: N/A (controller, not a battery).

Amazon ASIN: not confirmed for a live listing clearly titled Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 / SCC110030210 on the research day. Nearby hits for other MPPT sizes are not this SKU.

When to call a pro

Call a licensed well contractor and electrician — and follow local permitting — before anything goes in a well casing or on a battery bank:

  • You do not already know static water level, casing ID, and required head/flow.
  • You are choosing solar-direct vs battery-backed layouts.
  • Wire sizing, fusing, grounding, and disconnects are not already designed.
  • The pump will sit deeper than the maker’s install limits (SunPumps SDS manual: never install over 50 ft under static water level).

This site will not walk through well development, trench wiring, or torque specs. Maker PDFs exist for the person who owns the job.
