Automakers Rivian and Tesla have announced plans to move forward with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in their standard vehicles. This LFP battery advancement marks a move away from dependence on cobalt batteries which rely on a troubling sourcing and mining practices in Congolese mines. Recent awareness into this situation has spurred social concern.
These two vanguards of EV tech will help to push the technology forward at a faster rate. Currently the LFP batteries are better able to handle power cycling than the traditional cobalt batteries. On the down side LPF do not hold as much range currently. It is expected that this chemistry may unlock the next wave of battery storage advancement.
